4 Warning Signs of Tornadoes

If you live in an area that experiences tornadoes often, such as Tornado Alley, it is crucial to know the proper warning signs of a tornado. Though, everybody should have a basic understanding of the warning signs of these destructive storms. Here are four warning signs to look out for:

  1. A Dark Green Sky — If you see dark clouds in a green-tinted sky, take it as a signal that a tornado could occur. The green sky effect results from a setting sun meeting thick clouds of ice particles and water droplets (essentially massive thunderstorm clouds with a tinge of dark green). Of course, a green sky nor dark, threatening-looking clouds guarantee the development of severe weather, like a tornado. But If you spot these green clouds, it’s worth it to be aware and cautious.
  2. A Funnel-Shaped Cloud — The most obvious sign of a tornado is probably a funnel-shaped cloud. A funnel cloud is a rotating column of air that extends from a parent cloud. Though, it is only considered a tornado when it touches the ground or has a dust whirl or debris cloud below it. Regardless of if the funnel cloud is touching the ground or not, take it as a strong sign that a tornado could form and that you should find shelter right away.
  3. Loud, Freight Train-Like Sounds — If you hear a noise on a stormy day that is similar to a freight train, but you aren’t near any train tracks, it could be time to act. Tornadoes are often described as making loud noises similar to stampeding bulls, a roaring waterfall, or a rushing freight train. The persistent, booming sound of an oncoming tornado can happen day or night and does not fade away in a matter of seconds, unlike thunder. It’s important to note that not all tornadoes make these noises. Always rely on information from trusted sources to know when to take shelter.
  4. Approaching Debris Cloud — Another warning sign of tornadoes is a debris cloud. As the name suggests, a debris cloud is dust and debris below a tornado or funnel cloud. A debris or dust cloud will form when a funnel cloud reaches the ground and collects loose objects and dust. If you live in an area prone to tornadoes, ensure that the items on your property are secured or put away when not in use. Never try to store loose items amid a storm — it’s not worth it!
